FFL Transfer Policy
How transfers work, our fees, what to bring and how to have a firearm shipped to us.
Last updated: October 22, 2026
Bought a firearm or suppressor from another seller? Have it shipped to High Desert Armory and complete the transfer at our shop in Van Horn, Texas. This policy explains how incoming transfers work and what they cost.
Transfer fees
- $30 per firearm transferred on an ATF Form 4473 (rifles, shotguns, handguns, frames and receivers, and suppressors transferred without NFA registration).
- $45 per NFA item transferred on an ATF Form 4 (for example, a suppressor you choose to register).
Fees are due at the time of transfer and are charged per item. If a transfer can’t be completed because of a background check denial or because you are not eligible to receive the item, the transfer fee is still owed.
Before you buy
- Contact us first at (432) 284-9553 or dennis.marsh@highdesert-armory.com so we know a shipment is coming. We’ll send the seller a copy of our federal firearms license.
- Make sure the item is legal for you to own in Texas and, if you live elsewhere, in your home state.
- Ask the seller to include your name and phone number with the shipment. Packages we can’t match to a customer may be refused or returned.
Who can transfer here
- Handguns, frames, receivers and suppressors: Texas residents only, age 21 or older. Out-of-state buyers must use a dealer in their home state.
- Rifles and shotguns: Texas residents age 18 or older. Out-of-state residents may also receive a rifle or shotgun in person if it’s legal in both Texas and their home state.
- Everyone must pass a NICS background check unless an exemption applies (for example, an approved ATF Form 4).
Picking up
- We’ll call you when your item arrives. Shop visits are by appointment, daily 4:30–8:30 PM.
- Bring a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID showing your current address. If your ID doesn’t show your current address, bring a supporting government document (such as a vehicle registration or voter registration card).
- You’ll complete ATF Form 4473 in person. We can’t release a firearm if the background check is denied, and a delayed check may extend the wait.
NFA items on Form 4
If you choose to register an NFA item, the seller transfers it to us on a tax-free ATF Form 3 and we file the ATF Form 4 to you. You’ll need fingerprints and a passport-style photo for each responsible person. We hold the item until ATF approves the Form 4. Texas residents may pick it up or, after approval, have it shipped to a Texas address under ATF Procedure 2020-1.
Holding and returns
Please pick up your item within 30 days of our call. After that we may charge a storage fee or return the item to the seller at your expense. If you’re denied or can’t complete the transfer, we’ll return the item to the original seller (shipping at your expense) or follow other arrangements allowed by law.
